What are “SERPs”?

SERPs is short for “Search Engine Result Pages”. These are the pages that appear with listings when searching for something on the Internet.

If someone goes to a ‘search engine’ (lets say google.com for example) and he/she searches for “domain names” – he/she will be shown a number of results based on that search term. That particular search would probably return millions of results – but the search engine would display them 10 results per page with the most relevant (best matched) results first.

The web site that shows up on as the first result for the search “domain names” can be said to have the “#1 SERP for the ‘keywords’ domain names“.

Better SERP placements means more traffic from search engines. To ensure better SERP’s for your website and keywords – you would need to have good ‘SEO’ (‘search engine optimization’) done to your site.

Better SEO = Better SERP placements = MORE TRAFFIC!

What is “Social Networking”?

Social networking is generally referred to the structuring of individuals into specific groups – like small communities. Individuals are able to communicate within a social network, make friends and meet like minded people. Basically, a social network allows individuals or organisations to connect with each other based on their interests and similarities.

Although ‘social networking’ is possible in person, especially in schools or in the workplace, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other internet users and develop friendships and business relationships too.

Social Networking has become a booming industry over the last few years. There has always been sites that allowed people to network, however the popularity has really increased in the past few years. One of the reasons for this could be the wide availablity of broadband internet – but there are obviously many other factors.

Below are some popular social networking sites:

  • Myspace.com
  • Facebook.com
  • Friendster.com
  • Bebo.com
  • Wayn.com

What is “SEO”?

SEO is short for ‘Search Engine Optimization’. It is the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives organically from ‘search engines’ such as google.com – yahoo.com – or others.

The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that the site will be visited by a user. It is very rare for someone who is searching for something to browse through millions of pages of results. It is more likely that he/she will end up visiting one of the links of the first 2-3 pages. Therefore, where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site.

A well optimized site – “SEO’d” site… helps to ensure that it is accessible to search engines and improves the quantity of traffic (visitors) to the site.

Basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can be performed by just about anyone who is willing to learn. It isn’t as hard as it may sound. In fact, there’s plenty of articles/tutorials right here on Demonised.com that you can try out. You can also search around for SEO forums – ask questions and get advice there.

However, if you don’t have the time to do all that then there are also many companies who can provide SEO services. It would be wise to understand what SEO is, what it involves, what it can do for you and then weigh up the costs of having professional SEO; before going ahead with something like this. I would also recommend researching a bit on the SEO company before making the plunge – not everyone can do what they claim.

What is a “Search Engine”?

A search engine is an information retrieval system designed to help find information stored on a computer system. However, in most cases; when we speak of “search engines” we are actually referring to a “web search engine” – which is a public search engine designed to search for information on the World Wide Web.

Search engines help to minimize the time required to find information and the amount of information which must be consulted, akin to other techniques for managing information overload.

The information searched and retrieved may consist of web pages, images and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in newsbooks, databases, or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.

There are various types of search engines, the most commonly used (popular) ones are listed below:

  • Google.com
  • Yahoo.com
  • AltaVista.com
  • Live.com (MSN)

These search engines are used for pretty much anything. However, there are also dedicated search engines which can find more specific information/resources – some examples listed below:

GHD Limited Edition IV Hair Straighteners

I bet this is going to throw a few of my regular users off gaurd! A review for Ghd Hair Straighteners (Limited Edition). Yep, that’s right – hair straighteners. Get used to because I’ll be reviewing all sorts of products over the coming weeks and months. Anything I use, my girlfriend uses or even someone else in my family uses – I can review. So lets get on with this shall we…

These aren’t just any ol’ run of the mill hair straighteners, they are made by a very reputable company (Ghd). They are the latest version (at the time of writing) and are dubbed “limited edition”. Available in three colours – black, white and baby pink.

I bought the white Ghd Hair Straighteners for my girlfriend for her Birthday. At the time I was thinking £130 seemed a lot to pay for something just to straighten hair!! I mean you could get a different brand for less than half the price…

Anyway, its what she wanted, so she got.

But I did some research before I went ahead and bought them. I wanted to see what the difference between these Ghd straighteners and other cheaper versions were.

The most important thing that I think puts these straighteners in a league of their own is probably the ceramic coated plates. I didn’t go too deep into the technologies of hair straighteners, but it was quite obvious that when these things emit such high intensity of heat – and this heat is applied onto hair – the last thing you want is for the hair to be damaged – long or short term.

These coated plates really help reduce damages that are caused by high levels of heat – which other straighteners fail at.

My girlfriend has been using an older version of Ghd straighters and these new limited edition ones were recommended by her friend and hair stylist. He said he’d been recommending them to all his clients and everyone who had bought them had been really happy.

She used them for the first time two weeks ago and has been telling all her friends how great they are. Apparently they straighten better than any other products shes used before and they remain straight all day. She said they heat up really fast and give out very high levels of heat, much more than other hair straighteners shes used.

All-in-all she is very happy with these straighteners and recommends them to anyone in the market for such products. So… there ya have it. The first womens hair product review coming from a man with no hair. Fantastic.

Oh… by the way, I paid £130 for these because I bought them for a high-street shop. You can find them for a lot less online. I recommend Amazon. You are buying from a reputable seller – and you get a guarantee.

And I highly recommend that you be wary of buying them for less than £100 – because there are a lot of fakes going around. Especially on ebay and gumtree. Despite claims of “brand new unopened with hologram and authentic labels” you still can’t be sure whether they are fake or not. Having the fake Ghd can be very dangerous for your hair because despite having the power and heat they don’t have the same high quality ceramic coating. So be very careful. Pay a bit extra from some reputable seller. As I said – Amazon is a good choice and they are cheaper than most other stores.

NamePros Live Auction – 19th June

I haven’t had any great luck with the NamePros.com live auction yet. Mainly because I’m usually out when the auction starts and only twice made it back home in time before it ended (but by then I missed the best part).

Since the Live Auctions started, I’ve submitted at least one lot of names at every auction. The first 2 times they did quite well. I sold a batch of LLL.in’s at twice the price I was expecting. However, the past few auctions haven’t been as good.

NAMEPROS LIVE AUCTION : 19TH JUNE 2008 @ 10PM GMT

I remember a few weeks ago I put 5 names and set a reserve of just $50. I was expecting the lot to fetch upwards of $100, but it didn’t even make the reserve! Since then, I’ve sold 3 out of the 5 of those domains for more than $40 each.

I guess its a matter of luck combined with what other domains are at auction at the same time. I’ve noticed my lots have always come right towards the end of the auction. By which time most people have spent their budgets, left the auction or just fallen asleep at their desk considering its quite late in the evening.

Anyway, I’m giving it another shot. I’ve put a bunch of names up for auction:

VirusDefinitions.info – Great keywords!!
AcneRemedies.info – Highly searched and high paying keywords.
SpywareBlockers.info – Gets 2-3 unique visitors per day 8-10 clicks per month.
DanceCostume.info
SpywareFree.info

Click here to view the auction or to bid

The domains have already passed the reserve price, but no way near what I was expecting even at pre-bidding stage.

I sold VirusUpdates.info just a few days ago for $45, plus AllergyRemedies.info for (i think) $25. Yet ALL five of those names above aren’t attracting more than $25 in total! Strange.

Someones going to get a really good deal if it stays like this.

Anyway, will report back on that soon.

How good is the new Firefox 3 browser?

I’ve only upgraded from Firefox 2 just over 6 hours ago… but it took me less than 6 minutes to notice just how fast it is. Version 3 was just released 2 days ago, on the 17th June 2008 – unfortunately I’ve been a bit too busy to download it on release.

Anyway, so… yes… this is fast. It feels much lighter than the previous version. So much so, that I’m getting into conspiracy theory mode! I’m thinking the guys behind Firefox sent signals to my version 2 browser a few days before releasing version 3. These signals slowed down my version 2… and now I’m version 3 it seems even faster than it probably is!!!!

Ok ok… enough of that.

I really like the new look. I can’t put my finger on it, but I just like the “lightness” of version 3. All my regular visited sites (NamePros, ManUtd.com, MiniNova etc.) load really really fast. When I scroll up and down it just seems light. Before it used to seem like my processor is under stress if I scrolled a graphics intensive page too fast. Not the case anymore.

Even myspace pages seem fine.

SO… its all good. I like it. Yeah yeah.. I know this ain’t exactly a super technical nerdy review… I’m not good at those anyway. There you have it. I like it. Simple.

Over 150 million .asia domains registered.

Domain registrar EuroDNS claimed that over 150 million names have already been registered.

Xavier Buck, chief executive at EuroDNS, explained that, during the general registration process, the registry awards the .asia domain name to the first person who submits the domain.

“In contrast to the previous Sunrise and Landrush phases, there will not be any auctions this time. Our new AsiaDNS/EuroDNS website platform is ready to receive all applications,” he said.

“With over 10 million domains registered in China alone, and over 150 million worldwide, the potential for .asia is only now starting to be realised.”

Edmon Chung, chief executive at domain authority DotAsia, added: “There are millions of great .asia domains still available on a first-come first-served basis.”
